Summer honors Undergraduate Summer Research Program - Harvard

The Division of Medical Sciences administers four research training programs for PhD students in the biomedical sciences at Harvard Medical School. In 2010, the Division will offer for the twentieth consecutive year a ten-week summer research program primarily for college students belonging to groups that are under-represented in the sciences. SHURP presently has 412 alumni from colleges across the country, over 90% of whom are continuing or planning to continue training and careers in the sciences. SHURP is one of the summer research programs participating in the Summer Research Early Identification Program of the Leadership Alliance, a consortium of 33 colleges and universities dedicated to improving the participation of historically underrepresented students in graduate education programs. The Program is offered for currently-enrolled undergraduates who are considering careers in biological or biomedical research sciences, who have already had at least one summer (or equivalent term-time) of experience in a research laboratory, and who have taken at least one upper-level biology course that includes molecular biology. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required.

TGEN Helios Scholar Program

The Helios Scholars Program at TGen provides students the opportunity to work under the mentorship of an experienced investigator, while working side-by-side with TGen researchers and their scientific teams. Students will work to unlock the mysteries of genetic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Autism, prostate cancer, melanoma and diabetes, as well as infectious diseases such as influenza and Valley Fever.
The Helios Scholars Program at TGen is a paid, 8-week position, open to exceptional high school, college, graduate and medical students who have an interest in developing their research skills.

USDA - Student Opportunities

USDA's student opportunities are designed to combine academic studies with on-the-job training and experience and to give students an opportunity to work with USDA while completing their education. USDA provides undergraduate and graduate students with paid opportunities to serve as assistants to scientific, professional, administrative, and technical employees.  Each USDA Mission Area or Agency manages its own programs.  USDA also provides opportunities for persons to fulfill their career goals through challenging internships that provide a path to permanent employment.

Minority Educational Institution Student Partnership - Dept of Energy

The Minority Educational Institution Student Partnership Program offers talented undergraduate and graduate students summer internship positions with the U.S. Department of Energy and its national laboratories. Positions involve scientific research or a focus on policy, business, and government relations. All internships include paid lodging, round trip airfare, and monetary compensation.

As Program participants, students receive an intensive 8-week assignment to "jump-start" their careers and develop their potential for future opportunities within the federal government. Students work side-by-side with leading scientists, engineers, and other top professionals to develop professional skills and enhance leadership capabilities.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships - Dept of Energy

his program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities.

The summer programs at the various laboratories will run from late May to mid-August, fall programs run from August through December and spring programs from January through May. The exact start date will depend on the laboratory and will be given to participants who have been accepted at that specific laboratory. Students are required to participate for the full term of the program.

Community College Institute - Department of Energy

This program places students from community colleges in paid internships in Science and Engineering and Technology at any of several different locations (see Choosing a Lab). Because of the comprehensive nature of this program many of the participants have felt it has had an enormous influence on their careers. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. They also attend career planning and numerous training/informational sessions. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities
