Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP)

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) sponsors a Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP) for undergraduate biomedical engineering students who have completed their junior year of college. This ten week program, from June 1 through August 7, 2009, allows rising senior biomedical engineering students to participate under the mentorship of world class scientists in cutting-edge biomedical research projects in NIH laboratories in Bethesda, Maryland. Please note: the BESIP is a separate program from the NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) in Biomedical Research.

Selected by a nationwide competition, the sixteen interns will have the opportunity to indicate preferences from a list of available NIH projects that involve areas of engineering or physical science expertise. The students will participate in group meetings, attend planned lectures and laboratory visits, and be encouraged to submit posters to the NIH Poster Day where summer interns from all disciplines present their projects.

Summer honors Undergraduate Summer Research Program - Harvard

The Division of Medical Sciences administers four research training programs for PhD students in the biomedical sciences at Harvard Medical School. In 2010, the Division will offer for the twentieth consecutive year a ten-week summer research program primarily for college students belonging to groups that are under-represented in the sciences. SHURP presently has 412 alumni from colleges across the country, over 90% of whom are continuing or planning to continue training and careers in the sciences. SHURP is one of the summer research programs participating in the Summer Research Early Identification Program of the Leadership Alliance, a consortium of 33 colleges and universities dedicated to improving the participation of historically underrepresented students in graduate education programs. The Program is offered for currently-enrolled undergraduates who are considering careers in biological or biomedical research sciences, who have already had at least one summer (or equivalent term-time) of experience in a research laboratory, and who have taken at least one upper-level biology course that includes molecular biology. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required.

TGEN Helios Scholar Program

The Helios Scholars Program at TGen provides students the opportunity to work under the mentorship of an experienced investigator, while working side-by-side with TGen researchers and their scientific teams. Students will work to unlock the mysteries of genetic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Autism, prostate cancer, melanoma and diabetes, as well as infectious diseases such as influenza and Valley Fever.
The Helios Scholars Program at TGen is a paid, 8-week position, open to exceptional high school, college, graduate and medical students who have an interest in developing their research skills.

USDA - Student Opportunities
